Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 12:51:31 EDT
Hi all!
Since there hasn't been much correspondence, I thought I'd help the doldrums by posting another article about Mandy and CH in Gail Shister's TV Talk column today in the Inquirer:)
I have some observations and wish others to comment, too:
1)1st 5 episodes and 7 of the 1st 13!!! Yippee!! My VCR will be working overtime:) I hope he does more!
2) Christine Lahti should stop whining and get a life!
3) Now we know why all the shifiting and cancellations of concerts :(
4) I wish I knew that individual in Maui who is having the New year's bash with "our: Mandy :(
5) More and more it seems as if Mandy WILL actually do Wild Party:))))
6) We'll know 8/28 or thereabout whether he won the Emmy! prob be posted on the Emmy site 8/28 www.emmys.org I think.
Enjoy the article!!!! (There is an accompanying B&W pic of him on a bench in a musing pose....

Anyone planning to attend the East Lansing concert should be aware that
it is a Mamaloshen show- not a Kidults one. I didnt find out until today
when my ticket arrived in the mail. I still want to go- having never
seen a Mamaloshen concert, but just wanted everyone to know about it.

Hi all
I have received several emails contributing to the fund (still need a house
though) but they are being sent privately. Just to remind everyone that now
that we are back to the original list "reply all" sends the message to the
List and the original poster and doesnt create duplicate Mandy posts!!
Concert Fund Goal" $40 Trillion plus $1 (we have to outbid Maui)
Contributions so far: $4

If you don't mind the possibility of being squished up against
Mandy....I'll make sure my house is big enough. That "list fund" is an
interesting thought....Carol (have a big back yard and only occasional
earthquakes)

Well, I finally saw the CH commercial which had MP in it. Actually he
was the only one in it...something like Mandy Patinkin...another reason
to watch the new CH. There were a few different scowling poses. I hope
they let Geiger smile at least a little. The clothes were great...loved
the colors.

I imagine those who were planning to go to the Amherst concert got the same
letter as I did, but for anyone who didn't, here's what it said:
We have learned that Mandy Patinkin is unable to perform at the Fine Arts
Center on Sept. 25, 1999 due to his taping schedule for the television
program "Chicago Hope." We have been assured of his intention to re-schedule
this performance as soon as possible.
There's more, but that was the important part. At least it was postponed for
a good reason!!

I saw Ragtime on Broadway last week, having been invited FOR FREE to
accompany a trip for middle school kids. It was quite good, very intense and
emotional, and as I watched the character Tateh, I immediately thought, Mandy
would be great in that role. On the bus on the way home, the two teachers
who always accuse me of being a stalker because of my obsession with Mandy,
asked if I had seen the movie. I said no. One of them said, "Well, Mandy is
in it. Why haven't you seen it?" I answered, without thinking, "Mandy's
not..." and then I remembered, "...oh, he is!!!! You're right!!!" So now I
have to rent the movie. Anyone have any thoughts on it? Does Mandy play
Tateh?

Mandy is Tateh. Definitely see the movie. Mandy is very good, but the movie
is not faithful to E. L. Doctorow. Tateh's character is undeveloped and
edited to death. It must have been a disappointing experience for Mandy.
Mandy would be perfect in the musical. Is Peter Friedman still in the role?

Ina -
Thanks for posting the Philadelphia Inquirer article - it sounded so Mandy.
Cute.
I feel compelled to comment (and things on the list HAVE been slow, so
decided to just go ahead and post.)
<< Even Christine Lahti, who knew she was leaving at the end of her four-year
contract, was disappointed at how abruptly surgeon and aspiring astronaut
Kate Austin was sent packing.
"I lobbied for her to leave with dignity. I wanted more closure. A more
drawn-out, dramatic story line. Some great dying scene, or her orbiting the
moon and never coming back. Something." >>
Well, in regards to Austin, I think we all (almost) wanted closure!
dignity/Austin Isn't that an example of an oxymoron? We all know she just
wanted another excuse to cry.
And I guess no one bothered to tell her during astronaut training that space
shuttles don't go to the moon. Maybe she was in the OR killing someone and
weeping the day they covered that.

Subject: MP: Excerpt from long article about David E. Kelley
Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 22:44:35 -0800
"That why he has to write all these shows. . . . He has such a unique
voice, you can't duplicate it," Stayton said. "It's like Michael Jordan
. . . as soon as you think you've got him down, he'll blow by you in
another way."
Nobody knows that better than the actors who fill his shows. L.A. Law
star Harry Hamlin left that series in 1991 when Kelley departed; both
Mandy Patinkin and Peter MacNicol admit their decisions to leave Chicago
Hope in 1995 were influenced by news that the creator was moving on.
When producers approached Patinkin to return for what will probably be
Hope's final season, their biggest selling point was summed up in four
words: Kelley will be there.
"I said I'd be there in a heartbeat,' " says Patinkin, despite strong
statements in 1995 that work on Hope meant too much time away from his
family. "If you asked me four years ago, would I be talking about
Chicago Hope again, I never would have thought that."
Already, negative buzz is building about the pilot for Snoops, which has
received lukewarm responses from critics despite an extensive overhaul
by Kelley after ABC scheduled the show for fall. Others remain skeptical
that he can pick up the pieces on Chicago Hope without greater
involvement as a writer.
That's nothing new for Kelley, who has built one of the biggest careers
in television by confounding the skeptics.
"I don't think I've ever thought any of my pilots was working when they
aired, so this won't be any different," Kelley said, smiling a little.
"I know I don't plan on taking much more on. My agents would love for me
to do more . . . (but writing) four may be my limit."
