The "OFF" part is that I just watched The Thomas Crown Affair (Pierce
Brosnan and Renee Russos).........

I think I'd add Brosnan to the sexy men list. Nice tush, but actually
"doing it" on a hard marble staircase doesn't appeal even with someone who
looks like that! *giggle*

And the "off" part is that I'm going out of town for ten days and want to
know if I have to completely unsubscribe or is there a way to just go on
"no mail" for that ten days? The opera list I'm on has a no mail setting.
I'd ask Vera privately but the address I have for her keeps bouncing the
mail back. Sorry gang.

My thoughts entirely! I even find myself wishing for "Kate" back -- as
pathetic as that sounds -- at least she could act -- excessive crying and all!

Well, here goes.... I arrived Saturday afternoon and sent an invitation to
the room of Wendy, Jo and Pants, as well as my friends Kathy S. and Marilyn.
We had our very own birthday party, cake, bubbly and we all enjoyed looking
at the birthday book. The book looked GREAT, 35 people had contributed and
many thanks to all of you that did. ( Wen, Jo and Pants will tell all about
everything much better than I so I ask them to please fill in the blanks)
Besides they have their own wonderful reports about Friday night. Anywho....
after our party we went down to eat then it was time for the concert.
I really enjoyed the concert although he skipped ALOT of songs that I have
been hearing about, however he did sing Honey Bun which I enjoyed immensely.
All in all it was wonderful and very enjoyable indeed!
After the concert I got word via security where Staci wanted us to wait ....
we took our sweet time getting over there, thinking it would be a long time.
It was a VERY good thing that Pants and I walked around and saw that he was
right where staci had told us to wait, and he was there BUT OUR GROUP WAS NOT
!!!!! Joanne was yakkking the ears off of our group WAYYYYYYY the frig on the
other side of the building !...I had to run over, wave arms, signal and
whatever she was saying must have been SOOO interesting because no one saw
me,, finally I walked right up to them and said "Lets Go " in a very
instructional voice. And yes I did get their attention then. They came along
and by the time we got there ... the message that we all were digesting was
"NASA, we have a problem ." You see just beyond this area was a group of
about 75 people in a roped off area having a reception that he was obviously
supposed to go to. And was heading in that direction. All I can say is that
we went into a VERY controlled state of panic. Some other fans were blocking
him from getting there and during that time I caught Staci eye and she shot
me a look saying "OK, im trying " with in a min or so she must have taken him
physically and shoved him right into our circle because all of a sudden, he
was RIGHT in the middle of us! So were like OKKK , what was our plan again ??
OK did every one get their pic I said, just like the perfect event planner
would, No indeed three of them had not, OK got the single pics our of the
way.. and then it was time, I was on !! First I showed him these little
gizemos that Carolm had given me that had her recorded voice on it, and then
we recorded a message to her, and then of course I had a second one and he
recorded a message to me ... it was very cool... ok so I think I said, Ok now
IM here officially or something like that.
I showed him the book and told him it was from just a mere few of the fans
that he had on the Internet, and that i hoped he would enjoy reading it and
pointed to the first page that had a story about the friends i have made, and
said something like, you know Mandy , one of the most extraordinary things
you have done for our group has been giving us the gift of friendship, that
many of us had made wonderful life long friends, I pointed to the girls
standing around me and said that I would have never met them if it hadn't
been for him (OK i hate to be dramatic but embarrassingly I started to get
choked up) he just looked at me very intently and seemed extremely touched.
He thanked me and kissed me on the cheek (was it just me or did I actually
hear a collective awwwww sighing sound from everyone watching ? ) Anyway, now
you gotta ask the others more about this and before I go on I will tell you
the funny part of all of this. Unbenonset to me the ENTIRE time Mandy was
with us, we were being FILMED by CBS ! There was a mic being held right over
my head, I had no idea! More about that later.. so then it was time for our
group shot, at which time I wanted Pants to come up and show him her pages,
they were so detailed they kinda needed instruction, I have never seen so
much work go into a project, Pants I want you to tell them all about your
page. Ok so while she did that we all gathered round for our group shot, he
then turned to the camera and said "I want this played at my memorial " !!!!!
WOW , I still cant get over that he said that, then with Pants right there he
looked at the camera again and said something like " This is my most loyal
fan, she has followed me all the way back from Chicago " and he said a lot
more about Tanja too, it was so cool, and this was all being FILMMMMMMMMED
!!!!
After that moment it was time to get to work, who was filming and why, oh CBS
for the show Sunday Morning on CBS, located the director and got all the info
I could and am supposed to contact him in Jan, to see when the show is on and
if maybe we could have a copy of our little segment. Not hopeful but you
never know.
We now ran into Gwin, and took some pics and then out into the night.. It was
over .... But it was one of the best birthday partes I have ever been too.

KJ<~~thanks everyone who helped, especially Wendy, Jo and Pants.

I'm sure you'll be getting lots of Scottsdale details from me and others
over the next day... but since you've been discussing CH the last few days
I'll mention quickly what MP told me backstage after Friday's show.

I asked him if he regretted going back to CH since David Kelley is not
doing the writing. A smile passed his lips like he was deciding whether to
tell how he really feels... I said "You're going to be diplomatic, aren't
you?" He may or may not have been diplomatic, but this is what he said:
He is very frustrated that David Kelley isn't writing and the direction
that it has taken his character. I mentioned that Geiger has become a
"mean son-of-a-bitch". Mandy agreed and said he'd been lobbying to change
that. He says that Geiger will be different in episode #8. He at first
said that DEK wrote it, then said that DEK did a one-page rewrite... so I
don't know how much input DEK ultimately had, but MP seemed to think #8
will be better. Also, MP will only appear in #8, #11, #12, and finally
#15. #15 is it for Geiger. Mandy said his character is being phased out
(meaning now since there seems no direction in the show and he's been both
busy and frustrated) and he is not sure how he will ultimately be written
out. Wendy asked if Geiger will be killed and Mandy basically said "No" but
that he didn't know how it would end. I told him 'You should marry Diane
Venora and move off somewhere." From there the conversation drifted as
MP started telling me about Diane Venora and how she is doing Hamlet and
from there we talked about Wild Party....

More details later when I get a chance to relax. I am sure others will be
contributing even before I write again...

I will say that there were cameras there filming for CBS News Sunday
Morning (anyone here work for CBS News?) [Coverage to air after the new
year some time.] They filmed the entire concert and the meet and greet
afterwards in the center lobby.

PS--Mandy did a little dance to Singing in the Rain last night--quite a treat!!

For all those who didn't make it to the theater to see "Elmo in Grouchland,"
you will soon be able to watch it at home! It's being released on 12/21 on
both VHS and DVD. You can pre-order now at Amazon and probably other online
sellers as well.

Both. He grabbed me and turned to the camera (which I was somehow
oblivious to, but he being the showman was not) and started talking about
the first time I saw him in concert with a group of people (a few on this
list) in Clevleland from the Chicago Hope chat on AOL. (He said
Cincinnati, but asked me for verification.) I think he called me by both
names on camera (which, I doubt will ever air and certainly hope will not.
The extent of my "Mandy insanity" is mostly unknown to family, friends and
colleagues and I'd prefer it stay that way.)

Okay, okay!!! First you have to remember that we all had to travel to
Scottsdale which means that we all had to travel back home today to get to
our computers. So have a little patience please!!! :-))

I am going to start this but I am REALLY tired so it will take reports from
several of us to get in everything. I am really finding that going to see
Mandy takes so much out of me emotionally or something (plus I never get
much sleep while I'm on the trip) that I am always wiped out when I return.

Wendy, Tanja, and I flew to Scottsdale Friday afternoon and saw Mandy Friday
and Saturday nights. Kathy Jo and her friends Marilyn and Kathy S. joined
us Saturday for the Saturday night show. Neva was also there Friday night.
We met Gwen (gondancing (sp?) ) there on Saturday night.

As was earlier reported, Mandy has been sick for the past few days. And we,
who have seen him when his voice was in great shape, were able to tell. The
shows were shorter than usual -- a little over 90 minutes, including
encores. The encore period was very brief. He stuck to songs in the lower
range and sang a few things in a lower voice than usual. He did do
"Somewhere over the Rainbow" Friday night and managed to hit the high note
at the end. But he did not do it on Saturday because believe me, he
wouldn't have hit it! He was really losing his voice toward the end of
Saturday's concert and it was cracking quite a bit. Not that he ever
mentioned being sick. He was his usual entertaining self. And from what we
heard people say afterwards, nobody else even noticed he wasn't in his best
voice. So that's what we get for seeing him so often! :-) He did NOT do
"Coffee in a Cardboard Cup" either night. Instead he did "Honey Bun". He
had some great audience members up on stage with him and he was VERY funny!
He is so good at adlibbing and playing off of people! He sang a lot of
stuff from Kidults. We were pretty surprised that he didn't say anything
about the new album to either promote it or explain why he was doing that
music. On Saturday night, when he came out for his encore, tons of people
were shouting out songs for him to do. All different songs, because he
really didn't do much of his standard fare. I've never heard so many songs
being shouted out before. He listed to everyone, smiled and said "okay,
we'll do them all". Of course he didn't, but it was a cute moment. He did
"Buddy's Blues" Saturday night during the encore but not Friday night.

After the show Friday night, the three of us had a chance to chat with him.
He spoke at length with us about "Chicago Hope" and Tanja will tell you
about that. We talked a little bit about "The Wild Party". He said he
didn't know if he wanted to do it at first but then he did the workshop and
had so much fun that he decided he wanted to do it. He said it's a real
ensemble show and you have time to get to know each of the characters. The
original poem was about the turn of the century and I got the impression
from what he was saying that this will be kind of related to the new
millenium and the whole idea of change or new times or new century or
something like that. He said the music is really "eclectic". He said it
will be very "interesting" and may be great or it may suck (I can't remember
if he used that exact word but he said something like that). But I
definitely got the idea that he was looking forward to doing it.

I had a really terrific moment with him personally. I had acquired a
picture of him and Joe Papp that was taken in 1983 and I gave it to him
Friday night. He absolutely loved it and said that he had no pictures of
him and Joe and had looked everywhere for one. He had pictures of Joe that
he had taken in his apartment with his kids but had none of him with Joe.
He was very excited and showed it to everyone in the room saying "wait till
Kathryn sees this" and finally he gave it to somebody (probably Staci, I
don't remember) and said "hang onto this, don't lose it!" He gave me a big
hug and kept thanking me over and over for it. He said it was the best
present anyone has ever given him and he asked me what he could give me in
return: did I want free tickets to his concerts for the rest of my life?!!
(Well you know he's never luke-warm about anything!) I laughed and said no
thanks, I was just glad he liked it because when I had seen it, I had felt
like it was something he would like to have. And in all honesty, I was
really thrilled that he was so pleased with it. I had given him a picture
to sign and so he wrote me a thank you note on the picture. I think, no I
KNOW, that picture is going to be framed! :-)))

Saturday night Mandy was supposed to go to a little roped-off reception that
was in one section of the lobby. (The concert hall was inside a larger arts
building). So we saw him in another section of the lobby while he was on
his way to this reception. Staci knew that we were going to give him the
birthday book so she made sure that he stuck around until we'd had a chance
to do so. First we all had a chance to greet him personally and get a
picture taken with him. I went first and I spoke with him briefly and then
asked for a picture with him as we hadn't done that the night before. So he
turned toward the camera and kind of leaned toward me but didn't put his arm
around me like he usually does for these moments. So without even thinking,
I said laughingly (I can't believe I did this!) "oh c'mon Mandy, put your
arm around me!" So he put his arm around me and the next thing I knew he
had me in this bear hug with both arms around me and so I just grabbed him
back! I have no idea what the picture will look like: I have a feeling I'm
going to have a very surprised look on my face! And then he thanked me
again for the picture, which was very neat.

Tanja went up and spoke with him next and we took pictures and then each of
the rest of us did the same. Kathy Jo finished and then brought the book
out. Unfortunately the acoustics were so bad in this place that we couldn't
hear what she was saying to him but we were very busy snapping pictures of
the event. She told us later that she said something to him to explain the
book and that because of him she had made all these new friends and how much
they meant to her and he was very touched and thanked her and gave her a
kiss on the cheek. None of us got a picture of that so I lifted my camera
and yelled "kiss her again Mandy" but he didn't hear me. KJ can give you
more details of what was said. He did flip through the first few pages of
the book.

A side note about the book: it really came out nicely and thank you to
everyone who participated. Kathy Jo did a super job of putting it all
together and those of you who sent her things and requested her to put them
together for you should know that your pages turned out great! Everyone's
pages were so unique. No two pages were alike and I know Mandy will really
enjoy looking at them. There was a supplement to the book: Tanja put
together several unique pages that she can describe that had to go in
another binder. Let me just say that these pages were interactive and
really fun. KJ gave that to Mandy also and then Tanja came up and showed
him how to work the pages. He thought they were great. Then we did a quick
group picture and he had to run off to the reception.

Now you will love this: Apparently CBS is doing a piece on Mandy to air on
their Sunday morning show sometime after the first of the year. They filmed
the whole Saturday concert. And then they were out with their camera and
boom microphone filming the whole thing in the lobby. We didn't even notice
them at first but they apparently filmed all of us meeting with him and the
birthday book presentation. When we were all standing around him waiting
for Staci to snap our group picture, Mandy started talking to the camera
about the book and us and then he said to the camera guy: "I want this
played at my memorial service!" We don't know for sure how much they got or
will use but I did see them filming KJ's presentation to him. So that was
pretty exciting!

I got about two seconds time to speak with Staci and I asked her how Mandy
was feeling and she said he was feeling a lot better. They have another
week on the road. But I think he was probably feeling better on Saturday
than his voice sounded so he had to get it to last for another few days.

We saw him leave the Center Saturday night wearing a black jacket and
carrying his purple backpack. He apparently walked back to his hotel. It
is amazing to see him do this. No limo, no star treatment, he just walked
through the mall where the Center was and off to his hotel, or wherever he
was going. Nobody noticed him as he walked by.

So that's it in kind of a nutshell. The others can fill in more details but
I wanted to get the gist in now because I know a lot of you wanted to know
about the book. KJ can probably tell you what he said; like I mentioned, we
couldn't really hear very well. But he seemed to be very pleased.

And finally, my personal thanks to Kathy Jo for all her hard work in
organizing and coordinating and assembling the book. It was especially nice
to see pages from Germany and Israel. Wendy also put together an
international page showing locations of some of our members from around the
globe. I think the final product was really neat and I know Mandy will
really enjoy looking through it and reading the wonderful messages that
everyone wrote him. So now, Kathy Jo, you can get back to your
regularly-sceduled life again!!! :-)

A great time in Scottsdale; hope you enjoyed hearing about it. KJ, Tanja,
and Wendy will fill in details I've left out or forgotten or more likely,
don't know about!

:-) Joanne

Actually, we want the raw footage most of all, since probably only a couple
seconds of the meet and greet would ever air. (We are already scheming on
ways to get it, but it is a longshot that we'd ever get it.) They taped
most everything and were sticking the boom mike above Mandy's head much of
the time. The acoustics were pretty bad in there, so that microphone
probably picked up more than many even heard of the post-concert hoopla.

Thanks to KJ for all the work of putting the book together. And the
few I saw were very touching and thoughtful works of art. Dare I say
it's a good thing that KJ's married to a dentist because I know
trying to get people involved can be like pulling teeth.

It feels good to be a part of something that made Mandy happy. As
Staci said last year, he walked around reading the scrapbook for
days. This should keep him going for even longer.....Carol

As phantm reported, Mandy is already very frustrated with the change in the
direction of CH and the fact that they are not really utilizing him much,
that Geiger's scenes seemed more of an afterthought. He WAS quick, however,
to defend David Kelley's lack of involvement in the show, considering
everything else he works on and there's only so much time one person has.
But he made the comment that others are now in charge of the writing and
"you can see how they've changed the direction of the show".

Writing to Mandy to express your frustration would be a waste of a good
stamp because he's already frustrated himself and has been trying to do
something about it. But he is going to be gone no matter what after episode
15. He said they have to figure out a way to write Geiger out because
Mandy's going to be doing "The Wild Party" and won't have time to film any
more episodes. He did say Geiger gets to be nicer in this upcoming episode
so that's something to look forward to! And I guess we'll have to enjoy it
while we can.

Kathi Jo,

It was really wonderful of you to organize the birthday book and get
everyone together to see Mandy like that. From your report and others here
on the list, I feel sure that he appreciated this wonderful gesture by his
fans. Thanks again for getting this together and letting the list members
participate!

Thank you--now I have "Moon Over Parma" running through my head constantly!
It replaces "Soliloquy" which replaced "Over the Rainbow" which replaced
"Jingle Bell Rock"--I'm hoping to get back to "Over the Rainbow" which I
loved in concert at East Lansing, even though he didn't try to hit the high
note at the end. It was the very last song, and I didn't blame him in the
least. I liked "Vleveland Rocks", liked the energy. I liked all the theme
songs and enjoy the show but I don't like Drew Carey's version of Whose
Line Is It Anyway" as much as the British version.

I feel certain that this was supposed to go to the list, but I am sure that
Jason has now realized what I did, that this list is set up so that one
can't just do a Reply To, as it then only goes to the person who sent the
original msg, and not the whole list; but that one has to do a Reply To
All, and then edit out the personal mailing address on the To: line, and
leave in the list address. I think this problem lies in the way the list is
being managed by its software program, and that it could be easily changed
by the list-owner. At any rate, here is Jason's email:

I hear he was wonderful in concert on Friday Night! My mother, Dee, and
my mentor/teacher Tracy Dressler went in my place, with my tickets...3rd
row center! I, of course, had a show at college both nights he was here
in scottsdale so i didnt get to see him perform, but........

I had heard that he was meeting people after the show on Saturday night.
So, I took my final bows, stepped off stage at 10:00PM, tore off my
costume and put on my street clothes to go and meet him. I arrived in
the lobby at, had to be 10:20. And I saw him with a crowd around him.
And a mike and a video camera on him. There was a big group of women
around him, and I thought, these HAVE to be list members. So i observed.
It was awesome, I got to see you guys give him the book. I was so happy
for you guys, oh and that speech he gave about you phantm, was amazing.
I was going to introduce myself to you guys, but i was worried about not
meeting Mandy, right after he talked to you guys he went into that
closed off area, THE DIRECTOR's CLUB, and chatted with some people,
obviously schmoozing, he signed a huge poster they had of him, with
Scottsdale Center For the Arts and the date on it, I hop they hang that
soon. He was in there for about 5 minutes and then came out alone. I
knew he had had a long night so I didn't take up too much of his time.
He came right up to me and smiled as I handed him the booklet from Oscar
and Steve to sign. I mumbled something about "...Sunday In the Park With
George bringing me to tears on a regular basis...", corny, but I was
nervous. I got my photo taken with him, and I got several shots of him
receiving the book, closeups. We'll see how they turn out.

I am just so glad I got to shake hands with him. And next time he comes
to town, I'm there. It was great hearing your stories, and I look
forward to more!

Question: My mom seems to think he sang Soliloquoy from Carousel on
Friday night. "You can have fun with a boy, but you gotta be a father to
a girl..." Also she mentioned the "If I only had a brain/heart/nerve
medley from Wizard...Is this going to be on Kidults?? She says it was
amazing. Does anyone remember any of the other stuff he sang either
night? I'm just torturing myself, I want to know what I missed out on! A
couple of my friends were disappointed he didn't sing "Finishing the
HAt". IS it commonplace for him to sing that song? Oh, and my mother
loved the Princess Bride Quote!

MP told how he was up for the part of Ron Kovics friend who he opens a
burger joint with in Born on the Fourth of July. Mandy had made an overlay
showing a burger stand where his character's name and Kovic's showed up
when you flipped the page. THis was back when Pacino was supposed to play
Kovic. Pacino killed the project (Mandy had landed the role by the way)
after he screened Coming Home for the potential cast. Also, a new tidbit
on the date story that I hadn't heard: Mandy had bought Kathryn a sweater
and a shawl and given it to her the night before their first date. She
loved the shawl but only liked the sweater... or something like that.

Also, MP told how he went to Oberlin with Isaac recently to tour the
college and how Isaac asked him to not wear his "belly pouch" or to tuck
his shirt in because it made him look too old! Mandy claimed he spent half
an hour in front of the mirror checking out how he looked with and without
the pouch, with shirt in and out.

Sorry that last reply (OFFOFFOFFetc) was so out of order. I set it to send
just before I jumped in the shower yesterday morning and didn't realize it
hadn't gone out. Other family members were on the computer all day and I
wasn't able to even check my mail till this morning. Of course when I
logged on, the first thing it did was send that old message. Glad to hear
Mandy is on the mend.

Speaking of which, or rather back to the sorta original subject of the CH =
theme, it sorta slid by me and I wasn't taping the titles, but the theme =
they were using for last week's crapola was at least partly a jazzed-up =
version of the old, beloved original theme.=20
