The birthday book presentation was excellent. KathiJo assembled a wonderfu= l=20 book thanks to her creativity and all the list people who wrote heartfelt=20 messages. Each of you who contributed offered a different spin on how Mandy= =20 had enriched your lives. I truly think he'll read the book and be touched b= y=20 it. KJ put it in a nice black notebook enhanced with a plaid ribbon which=20 gave it just the right finishing touch. (Of course, if any the video they=20 shot surfaces on CBS Sunday morning, you'll all know what I'm talking about.= ) Let's see.... on Friday night, Mandy really did his best even though it was=20 clear he wasn't feeling well. He alternated between his water bottle=20 (picture Linus and his blanket) and cup of tea all evening. I was first row= =20 at the edge of the stage and had an opportunity to observe his interplay wit= h=20 Paul. There was much murmured discussion between the two re upcoming songs.= =20 Paul was clearly concerned whether Mandy would be able to sing certain=20 numbers or have the energy for them. When it came time for =93Soliloquy=94=20= Mandy=20 took a deep breath, a swig from his bottle and said to Paul, =93Let=92s do i= t!=94 =20 He put 110% into the effort even though his voice cracked a bit on the high=20 tones and he had to nip a few of the notes he usually holds. He looked a bit pooped after the show, but Joanne=92s gift of the photo of h= im=20 and Joe Papp really perked him up. His reaction to seeing the photo was awe= .=20 He called Paul and others of his entourage over to show them. He told=20 Joanne that he had photos of Joe in his house, but he had no pictures of the= =20 two of them together. He=92d been asking everyone he knew if they had one,=20= but=20 had been unable to obtain one. In typical Mandy superlatives, he said, =93T= his=20 is the best present I=92ve ever received.=94 I suspect the photo will have=20= a=20 place on honor on a shelf in his home. My only complaint is that Joanne was just so doggone generous turning down=20 =93tickets for the rest of her life=94 and =93anything I can give you for th= is?=94. =20 *sigh* I mean, she could have simply said, =93Oh, no, Mandy, I am just givi= ng=20 you this out of the generosity of my heart, but my friend here will take the= =20 tickets.=94 ;) Joanne, Tanja and I were blessed due to his heightened mood to have an=20 opportunity for a nice long conversation of which they=92ve already provided= =20 details. =20 Other observations - he=92s now wearing bifocals. I didn=92t notice this in= =20 person, but Jo pointed out that it=92s very obvious in the photos we took. =20= I=20 guess this means his vision has finally leveled off a bit and we don=92t hav= e=20 to see those crazy double glasses again. Saturday night=92s Honey Bun was one of the funniest I=92ve seen. His comic= =20 timing and facial expressions were priceless. Tanja told about him taking=20 $100 from the first man and giving it to the second who indicated he hadn=92= t=20 =93married money=94. The guy (Joe, I think) was reluctant to take it. But=20= Mandy=20 insisted he put it in his pocket. A bit later he said, =93How you getting=20 home, Joe? Bus? You can take a taxi now.=94 And he patted the pocket wher= e=20 the bill was. When Joe got back to his second row seat, he handed the first= =20 man (front row) the $100 back while Mandy was recovering at the piano with=20 his water. Mandy walked to the front of the stage and asked him if he gave=20 it back then told the first man to return it to Joe. The first guy complied= .=20 It was obvious that Joe was more uncomfortable having the $100 than the=20 other guy was about losing it. =20 As Mandy sat on the edge of the stage during =93I=92ll be Seeing You=94 he s= topped=20 after a few notes, leaned forward and stuck out his hand to Joe. Joe stood=20 and reached through the front row to shake Mandy=92s hand. Mandy kept him i= n a=20 hand lock and very quietly said, =93No (indicating that a handshake was not=20= his=20 goal), give me the $100.=94 And he mugged as he handed it back to the first= =20 guy.=20 The book presentation was after this show and we all got individual photos=20 with Mandy. Mine was your basic side-by-side. Not like the incredible hug=20 that Joanne got as he squeezed the daylights out of her and thanked her agai= n=20 for the photo from the previous night. Nor did I sneak a kiss to his neck a= s=20 someone with the initials KJ did. I handed him 10 kopeks which I=92d brough= t=20 along in case he did =93Coffee=94. I said it was for his second honeymoon w= ith=20 Kathryn. He thanked me absentmindedly and started to hand the 2 5 kopek=20 coins to Staci when he actually LOOKED at the coins (aren=92t bifocals grand= !)=20 and said, =93This really IS 10 kopeks!=94=20 All in all a fun weekend with Joanne and KathiJo, Kathy S. and Marilyn. Goo= d=20 to see Neva again, and nice to meet Gwen even though it was brief. Jason,=20 you should have introduced yourself! And June, where WERE you??? I hope=20 Mandy knows what a great excuse he gives us to make new friends. :-> Wendy ----------------Message-boundary From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: OFF- Whose line? Just because a person is a stand up comic doesn't mean they can think fast on their feet. Just like a brilliant actor doesn't necessarily have to be able to sing, or improvise, or write, or direct. Or a cabaret singer should be expected to also be able to sing opera, or whatever. Stand up comedy is a separate skill from Improvisational comedy. Some people can do both, but some can't.
