He said never? Meaning never would he allow a whole concert to be played on
tv? I wonder why not?

It was Liz Hinchman who replied to the MP question--I just can't figure out
how to get my husband's name off and mine on the "From:" line. He says
there's a way but he doesn't know how either.

Just a quick note to say "hi" from the deep South of the U.S., near
Memphis, Tennessee. Last night was we went to my very first Mandy Patinkin
concert. What a thrill! I have a feeling it won't be my last.

I believe he said he didnt want the concerts taped, so people would come to
the live shows. Also, a taped concert cant compare to a live one.

That is crazy... there are a lot of people that will never get the
chance to see him perform live (for various reasons) and it would win
him more fans, not stop people from coming to his shows. Look at all of
the video concerts on the market- many of the singers have near sell out
crowds when they do tour. True, a live performance is MUCH better, but
I'd love to have a video of one of his concerts.. and I know a lot of
others feel the same way! Laurie

I use Eudora to read my mail. Look under "Tools" menu, then "Options" and

Due to popular demand:

The Memphis show was about 2 hours, probably a few minutes longer, and
although you could tell that he was nursing what appeared to be a cold, he
seemed in especially high spirits. I noticed in an earlier post that he'd
been drinking hot tea a few nights ago, but was only on the water last
night. He did the coffee number. Wish I could have heard him do "Honey
Bun", but guess that will have to wait.

Can't remember the name of the Harry Chapin song he did, but you know
it...the one about the father and son relationship. I feel that most of the
other songs he did were in most of his concerts. We were treated to the
Yiddish versions of Supercali...you know the rest...and Hoky Poky.
Soliloquy, Puttin' On the Ritz, Doodledy-Do...

About 50 or 75 folks went onstage, and seemed to have a ball...I didn't go,
though. One red-haired young woman was so moved that she stood there in a
lovely pale blue formal, crying, saying, "It really is you!" He was so
sweet, gave her a big hug, and told her that he hoped the experience wasn't
the highlight of her life. He made a great show of displeasure at the gifts
brought...from cell phones to the flowers he brought out on stage.

Shortly after the concert started, the inevitible latecomers arrived, only
to get singled out for "abuse" from time to time throughout the show. The
man was great, and when Mandy finally let him sit down (after making him
sing a chorus of Doodledy-Do) walked toward his seat and then on to the
back of the auditorium, as though he were planning to leave. When he turned
and walked back down the aisle, HE got a big round of applause, and Mandy
gave the audience a big glare. It seems like he has as much fun at his
concerts as the audience does.

Wish I could give more details, wish there had been a program to jog my
memory!

For a while I thought I was.... but at least twice, it was someone having
quoted someone else at the top without saying it was a quote. I think. So
I didn't notice that it was sent by someone other than the person who'd
originally sent it.

Unless I dreamed that.

Here is the entire litany of blessings. Some are silly, others serious. I
took the liberty of filling in some of the blanks. I am feeling seriously
stressed, compiling our answers was a way to regroup. Who am I kidding? It
was a way to avoid tackling the HUGE to-do list in front of me. :)

Anyway...no matter where on earth you are or what your situation may be, it
is my wish that each of us look around our lives and say thanks to Whoever
might be listening. We are all blessed. Face it, we're fortunate enough to
have computers and internet access. While we may not be named "Gates" we
are affluent enough to have heard of and even heard in person the
magnificent performer we celebrate on this list. There are so many in the
world who have much less.

Ok, no more preaching...I now return you to your regularly scheduled

There is a new movie called "Liberty Heights" which is a story about the
Baltimore Jewish community in the 1950s.

Mandy's recording of "Mein Shtetele Belz" is on the soundtrack.

On the first day of Mandymas, my true love gave to me....

A diamond engagement ring.

Jen <---knows this should be saved for #5, but he only gave her one.

I wasn't the first not to keep in order :) It would be impossible,
anyway, with everyone reading their email at different times. Guess we
could each try to do our own, complete alphabet though (or not). there's
another week until Thanksgiving, isn't there?

When he's wearing his other hat, Mandy Patinkin sounds a lot like his
Emmy-award winning character,
Dr. Jeffrey Geiger, on TV's Chicago Hope.

Singing old songs by Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein and
others is healthy, he said.
"I know when I'm away from them for a long time; it's like a transfusion
for my soul," Patinkin said.

Songs reflect the news, the weather "and the world at that moment."

He can sing a song 100 times, but each time it could be applicable to
what's going on at that moment,
whether it's the EgyptAir Flight 990 crash, Kosovo or someone's family.
"All of a sudden the song is
about that. That has to do with the genius and simplicity of those writers.
They knew the core of human
experience."

Patinkin knows a thing or three about singing. He won a Tony Award for his
1980 Broadway debut as
Che in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita. He was nominated for a Tony in 1984 for
his starring role in the
Pulitzer Prize-winning Sunday in the Park With George. Other Broadway work
includes The Secret
Garden and Falsettos.

Tuesday's show at The Orpheum will just be Patinkin accompanied by Paul
Ford at the piano. "About 60
to 65 percent of the show is new stuff. Then I always throw in old stuff. I
have lists in my pocket of old
stuff and I change it as I go along."

New songs usually are from whatever album he's working on at the time. This
time the album is
"Kidults," a CD that probably will be released in the spring. Patinkin
described it as "kids' songs for
adults and children. Or as Sondheim says, `Every great song is for the kid
in the adult.' "

Patinkin's concerts are free form. "That's why I love it; no rules at all,
just as long as you know enough
songs."

That doesn't seem to be Patinkin's problem. "I've got about six hours'
worth of material. My problem is
knowing when to get off."

Growing up, music was a major part of his life. Patinkin, who is from the
south side of Chicago, was a
soprano in the boy's choir at the synagogue. "The first music I heard was
liturgical music. I was there all
the time. I just loved it. I watched those old guys wailing and praying."

He began appearing in plays and musicals when he was in high school and
later at the University of
Kansas.

Patinkin then went to Juilliard school of drama. "I wanted to be an actor.
Music I knew. Drama was
something I had to learn. The two of them sort of fed each other. I only go
for a song that has a story. I'm
only interested in the words. If the words are good, the music will follow."

Patinkin, who has appeared in many feature film and TV roles, continues to
have fun with his words as
Geiger on Chicago Hope. He said he'll be in eight or nine of this season's
22 episodes.

"In this last episode (No. 8, which has not yet aired), we've tried to
change him a little bit, soften his
edges vis a vis his daughter, make him more compassionate. At the first of
the season they wrote him a
little rougher. The whole new group of writers was not as akin to the
characters as David was."

"David" is David E. Kelley, Emmy award-winning series creator, who also
created Ally McBeal and The
Practice. "I wish I could clone David and make more of him."

Kelley's multitude of irons in the fire can make people greedy. "Nobody
gets all of him. In a perfect world
I would love for him to be there all the time. I take what I can get and we
move on."

Patinkin is allowed to do concerts, records and Broadway shows and still be
a member of Chicago Hope.
In January, he'll begin work on a new Broadway show, The Wild Party.
Opening April 6, the musical is
adapted from a jazz poem. It also will star Eartha Kitt.

On second thought, he said, it is a perfect world.

Laurie

'Southern Hospitality' on tap for 1999 General Assembly delegates

      In just a matter of days - from November 16 - 20 - more than 4,000
Jewish professional leaders will be coming to Atlanta for the "Super
Bowl of Jewish Conferences," also known as the General Assembly.
To make their stay a most memorable one, Linda Selig and Lynda
Walker, 1999 General Assembly co-chairs, have added a few special
touches to the conference.
What Selig and Walker came up with is the first-ever "Southern
Hospitality Evening."
Twenty-four families will open their homes to the delegates by
inviting them to cocktail receptions the Tuesday evening before the GA
begins.
The second element to make Atlanta's GA record-breaking is the
unprecedented number of volunteers and sponsors who have contributed to
this major event.
The GA has more than 2,000 volunteers; and, with more than 50
local, national and international organizations contributing, more than
$750,000 has been raised to cover the costs of the event.
Confirmed special guest speakers at the GA will include: Israeli
Prime Minister Ehud Barak; former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz;
Mandy Patinkin (from "The Princess Bride" and "Chicago Hope");
Ambassador Dennis Ross, Special Middle East Coordinator; General Ariel
Sharon, Leader of the Likud Party; and Dr. Arye Carmon, president,
Israel Democracy Institute. Members of Atlanta community are welcome to
attend the GA by paying a reduced rate of $100 and becoming a delegate.
Delegates can attend any session or program at the conference.

Hi everybody

I have a question that's in my mind for a little while now: in the beginning
of the current CH season, i read somewhere (maybe on Phantm's site but i'm
not sure) that during the filming of the first episodes Mandy requested that
a picture of Peter MacNichol (Alan Birch) was put somewhere in Geiger's
office, just because he's the real father of Alicia (and because they were
good friends). So my question is: where is the picture?

I haven't seen it on camera. (Perhaps the Powers That Be don't want to
revisit old storylines--they certainly ignored the Birch/Alicia bit when
MacNicol guested on the 100th episode.) However, when the MacNicols
visited the set to say hello to Mandy, he told them he had requested a pic
of Birch for the desk. (They may even have seen it on the desk, though that
part I am not certain of.)

Hi,

i think too that it would be great to see a concert of him on video. Take
the example from Andrew Lloyd Webber: i never had the chance to see Cats on
a stage, and surely i won't until a lot of time, but with the Cats Video,
now it's possible to see it, and it makes me want to see it live more than
ever. And now videos of other plays like "Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat"(starring Donny Osmond) and "Aspects of Love" will
come out soon. And they will help gain new musicals lovers to the world of
Andrew Lloyd Webber.

I think i'd be in heaven being able to watch and rewatch Mandy in concert
again and again, when i want to. Colm Wilkinson has done it on PBS, and i
have the concert on tape, why can't Mandy?

Poutchy

ps: i have another question for you all, and maybe it would be fun to see
the answers: if Mandy was about to do an album entirely made of well-known
songs, songs that are playing on the radio, what would be THE song you'd
want him to do?

Mine would be....i have a lot of choices...but the one i choose is....

The Moody Blues'"NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN", because it is one of the finest
love song ever. And what is yours?

Well, generally I think Mandy's voice isn't best suited to popular stuff - =
I am probably in the minority here but Geiger's preferences aside, I =
haven't much cared for MP's forays into Motown on CH. This may be because =
a lot of pop, in my opinion, is short on both complexity and emotional =
depth. But he's done some Harry Chapin and done it well, probably due to =
his fondness for "storytelling" songs, and I'd like to see him do more of =
Chapin. First on my list would be "Sniper", which I think Mandy would =
sing/act the sh*t out of, and close second and third would be, in a much =
gentler vein, "Mr. Tanner" and "Mail Order Annie." These aren't quite as =
well known as "Nights in White Satin" but c'est la vie. ;)

There's another very obscure but fabulous singer/songwriter, David Ackles, =
much of whose stuff I think would be very suited to MP. Also "storytelling"=
, and with a strong emotional edge.

DR

my vote would be tough, since i love alot of songs, but i think i would
love to hear mandy sing "someone to watch over me", even if it is an oldie
but a goodie and doesn't make the radio these days!

Hi

two hours away from CH, aaaahhh, i'm tired of waiting

You can go to this link
http://www.movie-list.com/l/libertyheights.html
to see a glimpse of the new movie about Jewish people called Liberty
Heights, in which, apparently and according to a previous post on this list,
we will hear "Belz" sung by Mandy. We don't hear it in the trailer, but the
movie seems fun to watch.

And speaking of Jewish, it would be fun to see Mandy playing the role of
Tevye in the musical "A Fiddler on the Roof". I know he doesn't fit with the
character, but since Mamaloshen is my favorite Mandy album, i think it would
be great hearing him sing: "If i were a rich man,
yabadabadabadabadabadabadabada....."

Poutchy
