Patty,
Another nice thing about most e-mail, and the senders of it, is that you
can copy and paste and it puts those nice little marks > next to the things
that are copied so that everyone who reads it knows which things you are
saying and which things are being quoted. When you do it backwards or
haphazardly, marking what you say or only marking some of the quoted
remarks, it is confusing as all get out to follow the conversation. Of
course, considering the conversation, a lot of people are probably
following your earlier advice whenever they see certain names or subject
titles in e-mail.

Rene (would have said confusing as h-e double hockey sticks, but didn't
want to offend anyone ;-)

No I didn't get a chance to see him in City of Angels. I'm sorry I didn't.

He was on Ally McBeal on Monday night and I missed it. I was hoping someone
on the list would be able to make a copy for me, but no one answered my
message. I believe he sang on the show.

He is a very striking sexy man in person. Has beautiful gray hair. He is
very classy looking.

I once saw a show at Manhattan Theater Club that Nathan Lane was in.
Apparently James Naughton is a friend of his. He was in the audience
(sitting just across from me) with his wife. During intermission, many
people went over to talk with him and he was very gracious.

I hope you get a chance to see him perform in person.

  Helaine

Not while Bev, Diane, and Kendal are on the list!

Kim says >>>
Bev, I agree totally with you. Besides, there is no excuse not to use the
basic spell checker that is built-in to most mail programs. ,

I have an old version of Eudora on my
totally-obsolete-after-six-months-in-95 computer, and it has no
spellchecker. I know that I make gramatical errors (run on sentences are a
particular talent). However, expressing oneself so that others can
understand the context *is* important, otherwise reading and understanding
e-mail becomes a difficult task.

Bev said >>>>Well, except for KJ. We gave up on her a long time ago, and
now just accept
>it as an eccentricity on her part

Then Kim said >>>This must be some law of the 'Net; there is always one
person like this on
a list: sometimes I ask the list owner to say something to them, sometimes
I say something myself, but most of the time I just ignore them.<<<

What Bev was saying was that KJ has her own unique and interesting spelling
and grammer, and while many people jumped all over her for it early on, we
have now come to love and enjoy her posts. She has a great sense of humor,
knows how to laugh at herself, and expresses herself in a way that can be
quite enjoyable. I don't always agree with her views, but I always get a
kick out of reading her e-mail. Your remark about asking the list owner to
say something to someone who doesn't use correct spelling and grammer, on
the other hand, turned me off completely.

We do need to be able to accept people who might have difficulties in
expressing themselves in writing without errors. I have a particular
problem with overdoing the spelling/grammer thing, because my youngest son
is gifted and learning disabled. He can't spell worth a darn, but he
graduated from a top high school with a 4.0 average, and will graduate in
May from a five year program in computer engineering at RIT. He's already
been hired by a company where he has been co-oping for the last two years,
and will do quite well in life without the ability to spell well. The
computer is wonderful for him in schoolwork and business writing because of
spell checkers, grammer checkers, etc, but he told me he rarely uses them
in e-mail, because accessing them from his mail program is a pain, and he
feels the goal is to get your message across. He was an early internet
user and I'm sure people like you on his mailing lists sometimes wonder
about him, but I don't think that worries him at all. Not everyone wants
to reread every reply they make to e-mail, not everyone has the time to do
this. I think people should have the right to take part in a mailing list
whether their spelling and grammer are correct or not, as long as their
mail can be read and understood. Of course, they might be in for some
knocking about their errors, but people should just take that as a given
and ignore it.

Rene (who has her own pet peeve, people who write in all lower case
letters, because they are too busy to use the shift key . . .BULLETIN . .
.it takes way less time than using a (sometimes non-existant) spell checker
or constant re-reading, and even a third grader can do it!)

PS- I seem to be on a roll today, and having a sort of Jen-like reaction to
my mail. (love ya, Jen)

Shalom Meytal,

I'm not sure but I think that when a non-Jewish child is adopted by Jewish
parents the child has to go to the Mikvah. It is part of the conversion. By
the way it is VERY common for Jewish couples (even Orthodox) to adopt
non-jewish children.

Who has read "The Wild Party"? I started it and am having trouble
picturing it made into one musical, much less two in the same
year......Carol

I don't recall if anyone has commented on this: in the latest edition of
In Theatre magazine, they list the 100 greatest stage actors. Mandy is not
among them.... perhaps he has been away from the stage too long.
Bernadette did make the list, however.

Well I've read a synopsis and I find I'm in agreement with you Carol. I
asked Mandy about it in Scottsdale and he said it will be "interesting".
And the music is "eclectic". Even he didn't know if it would be successful
or not, but he did say he had such a great time doing the workshop of it
that he wanted to do the show.

So I guess we'll have to wait and see.

/ Joanne

P.S. Yes, yes, I know Eileen won't get this message

Personally, I never send an e-mail, or ANYTHING in writing, that I haven't
reread and proofed. (I just think of it as written evidence that I can
never get back or say I never wrote)! On the other hand, as Rene says, not
everyone does that. For whatever reason. It doesn't matter why. Or even
that they do.

I see the Internet as one more way of individuals expressing their own
personalities. This means that if someone wants to shout at us in all caps,
we should be able to take them at face value as they obviously made the
decision to shout at us. If someone is so lazy as to write in all small
letters or without any punctuation, we should be allowed to form a
conclusion about that. If someone uses bad grammar or poor spelling, then
that's okay too. But if person #2 wants to make an issue out of it, then
that is person #2's right to do so and it is a way for person #2 to express
his or her personality. The only problem I see is when people take any of
this personally. If you don't want anyone accusing you of using bad grammar
or spelling, then check your work before you subject others to it. If you
don't care, then fine. But be prepared to take some heat as there will
probably always be some people to whom this is important.

But none of this is personal, or at least it shouldn't be. The people who
do the criticizing shouldn't assume that the poor punctuator didn't care
enough about them personally to check their work before they sent it. They
didn't check it because it's not important to them. And the people who
receive the criticism shouldn't take it as an overall comment on their
fitness to live or to be on this List because the criticizer just cares
enough about the English language to want to see it used properly. And if
someone does mean or take any of this personally, then that person needs to
step back and get some perspective on what's going on here.

Bottom line: I say everybody should write the way they want to. And what
they want to. And be prepared for the same from everyone else. Until
Kathy Jo says enough already, she's bored. Then it's time to move on to
another topic. :-)

/ Joanne --> believe it or not, this was longer until I rewrote it and I
know it could have been even shorter but it's almost 1 a.m. and I'm tired of
this. I'm no longer even sure what my point is. But I'm sending it anyway
because I'm bound and determined that SMTP:[email protected] will sooner or
later get one of my messages or that Vera will take pity on us and
unsubscribe this person! :-)

Rats, sounds interesting, but there's not a copy of this within 30 miles at
least. Er, did KDK make the list? :)
