He has also played Odo (the security chief) on Star
Trek Deep Space Nine for the past 7 years (DS9 was just
cancelled this past Spring).

I just got home from work tonight, only to find my
emailbox jammed full of mainly junk on this subject and
I'd like to add my last email on this matter (perhaps
my last email, period - as I will unsubscribe if this
doesn't end soon).
Laurie - you were wrong to touch Mandy inappropriatly
in the first place, and wrong to discuss this with the
email list.
Mandy - you were wrong to say "feel free to touch me
anywhere you want" to anyone other than your wife. I
don't care if it was meant "jokingly" or not. From what
I heard, dozens of women who took it literally were up
on that stage in Springfield grabbing your ass, feeling
you up, etc. How do you think this makes your wife and
sons feel? Besides from encouraging rude behavior with
that remark, its dangerous as well. Wake up, man - by
playing touchy-feely with your fans, you're liable to
run into some psycho or stalker or neo-Nazi type and
God only knows what could happen.
And lastly - to the witches out there saying cruel and
unusual things like "virus", "therapy", "slut", etc -
get a life! I'm sure by now Laurie's aware of the fact
that this was wrong. Don't make yourself look like an
equally tacky idiot by stooping to such a low level
yourself with these juvenial remarks.
And PLEASE - everybody - lets let this matter drop!

I CERTAINLY SECOND BOTH CHAR'S AND KATHI JO'S POSTS. THIS IS EXTREMELY
TACKY AND DISRESPECTFUL AND REGARDLESS OF HOW MP FELT ABOUT IT (AND HE MAY
HAVE BEEN OFFENDED BUT FOR "PR" PURPOSES, DID NOT RESPOND NEGATIVELY) I
WOULD BE CONCERNED THAT WHEN/IF KATHRYN EVER HEARS ABOUT THIS SHE MAY
DISCOURAGE THE MEET AND GREET SESSIONS AFTER CONCERTS (AND I CAN'T SAY THAT
I WOULD BLAME HER). THAT WOULD CERTAINLY DISAPPOINT HIS FANS BUT YOU KNOW
HOW IMPORTANT HIS FAMILY'S FEELINGS ARE TO HIM. WAS THIS OVER THE LINE
INCIDENT REALLY WORTH THIS RISK? I WOULD HOPE NOT AND WOULD BE SORELY
DISAPPOINTED IF A FEW ILL-MANNERED FANS RUIN IT FOR THE REST OF US.

I'm sure you referring to me and I assure I have not been lurking. My Father
died in May and I have been sick for almost six months. I had no time for
reading anything on this list ( which had been all deleted for the most part)
, and was rarely in touch with any of my friends via email.

To my dismay, when I do open a piece of mail, it contains the most vulgar
actions one can imagine.I am not the least bit sorry if my words offended you
or anyone
else.. Just wanted you to know that I have been out of the loop since July...

Rest assured to, that when I do have something to say to this list, I have
just as much right as you or anyone else.

The following is my report on these two concerts. Galveston's theatre was
very nice-small and semi-intimate with about 1100 seats. We were lucky
enough to have front row (orchestra pit) seats. We were about 10 feet from
MP the entire concert and a little closer than that when he sat on the edge
of the stage. I will try to list some of the songs he sang at both but it
is not inclusive and I can't always distinguish which was sung at each
venue other than to say there were lots of duplicates but many that were
different at each concert:
Doodle Doo Doo medley started out both concerts. Over the Rainbow, Coffee
in a cardboard Cup (at both and yes he is still inviting participation on
stage and everyone was well-behaved, thank goodness-only tactful hugs and
kisses). Me and My Shadow, Rock a Bye, Casey, Anyone can Whistle,
Soliloquy, I'll be seeing you, a portion of the Happy medley (Alexander's
Ragtime band, Swanee, Mammy), Pennies from Heaven, Taxi, Cats in the
Cradle, How are things in Glocca Morra, Bring him home, Good thing going,
Being green, Ya got trouble, Ten Kopeks, Supercalif, and Hokey pokey,
Loving you, If I loved you, Emperor's new clothes, Every body says don't, A
tisket a tasket, Japenese Sandman, the Oz medley (if a only had a brain,
heart, nerve etc), the bath tub song, minute waltz, school days, oh what a
circus from Evita, which was fantastic, and some more from Kidults that I
can't recall the names of right now. Galveston was about a 2 hour concert
and the meet and greet afterwards was nice. Not a lot of folks and he
seemed a little tired, subdued and reserved but yet very accommodating with
photos and autographs. He said he was doing A Wild Party beginning March
6th or so on Broadway and told the story behind being asked to do the Al
Jolsen Story and the story behind A Wild Party. He is very excited about
this play and said the music was really great. When asked how long the
Broadway run was going to be, i.e. whether it was going to be a limited run
or not, he said he hoped for a long time. Kidults will be recorded in
January and on release in March I believe (maybe Feb. not sure on that
one). He told some new and amusing family stories that had everyone in
stitches, especially the ones about his two Labrador Retrievers. Often
between songs he would say very funny things and he is quite the comedian.
Also during some of the Kidult songs, his facial expressions were
priceless. If you want a great kiss at the Coffee number, I suggest you
bring tic-tacs or something similar as your gift as both times he put a
mint on his tongue and the tongue of the presenter and gave her a nice long
kiss. :-) Unfortunately we were too reserved or shy to participate. In
Fort Worth we had seats in the 7th row center and they likewise they were
exceptional. The Bass Hall is an exquisite venue and the accoustics are
unbelievable. He sounded much better than at Galveston and the crowd (2000
seats)was more receptive and he certainly seemed to feed off of the
people's responsiveness and enthusiasm towards him. This concert went for
2 and 1/2 hours and about 10 pm he looked at his watch and said something
to the effect that he was overstaying his time but if we would stay, he
would stay and the crowd went nuts with applause. Afterwards there were
lots of people waiting to meet him (so we need to quit advertising the meet
and greets as they are getting too crowded--just kidding) but he was really
up to meeting the fans and seemed more upbeat in chatting with folks. We
got great photos but didn't chat long due to the line and we were one of
the first to visit. I got to chat with the managing director of Bass Hall
afterwards as he is a friend of mine and he mentioned that he has seen lots
of great performers but never one that could work a room during a concert
like Mandy does. I did tell Mandy that I hoped he would return to Bass
Hall and he seemed to be impressed with the theatre. The concert itself
didn't end till almost 10:40 PM but it was just phenomenal (sp?) I enjoyed
it immensely and more so than Galveston, but Galveston was certainly worth
the 5 hour drive. He looked handsome and gorgeous as ever and is on his
way to Austin for a couple more concerts and then San Antonio for one.
Unfortunately, will not be going to those. Well, this is all I can think of
for now. Ladies, enjoy the rest of the concert schedule. I hope he is as
up for the remaining concerts as he was for Bass Hall.
Linda

The new TV Guide features an article entitled 'The 50 most unforgettable
characters' or something to that effect. I opened it with anticipation,
fully expecting at least a top 10 mention for the character Jeffrey
Geiger (with kudos to Mandy's brilliant portrayl(sp?), of course) and
NOTHING! Not to be found anywhere in the entire article.. Laurie

Dinny, you've said it far better and more thoroughly than I ever could. I
would, however, like to add this:

If I'm Kathryn and I find out about this, I'm not only gonna kick Laurie so
hard she won't need a bus to get back home, I'm also gonna open up the
largest can of whup-ass imagineable on my dear husband. You can bet yer
bottom dollar he wouldn't be inviting any more women up on stage to reach out
and touch any *part* of him.

I was sitting at home last night, watching my own hubby doze in the La-Z-Boy
after he'd driven several hundred miles after he finished his visit to a
customer site yesterday, just so that he could be at home with me, and I
thought to myself, "If anyone tried to pull a Laurie on my Dave, she'd be
stunned and amazed at just how much fury I could unleash."

It's obvious that Laurie still doesn't get it, and I don't expect she will
anytime soon. But perhaps she could put herself in Kathryn's position and
imagine how she might feel if some strange woman were fondling her own
husband's most private parts; maybe then she'd get some idea of why we're all
so outraged.

Wanted to share our local paper's review of MP from last night's concert.
Sorry I don't have a scanner so will type it here. Photo was a file photo
from maybe Bernstein's NY -- not sure. Good photo of MP at microphone
singing. Here is text:

Packed with Panache
Patinkin delivers full-range, crowd-pleaser performance at Bass Hall.

By Mark Lowry

Who can get the audience at Bass Performance Hall to stand up and do the
Hokey Pokey? Who can get them on stage to bear their gifts? The Mandy man
can. But that's not all Mandy Patinkin can do. He can make them roll with
laughter at his between-song banter and digressions during songs. He can
keep them utterly quiet while he croons a breathtaking rendition of Harry
Chapin's Taxi. And when pulling a Harold Hill with Ya Got Trouble from the
Music Man, he can get an oft-picked-on audience member, known simply as
Joe, on stage to lead the spectators (watching Patinkin work the stage made
the show feel like a sporting event) in the rousing chorus parts of the
song ("Oh ya got trouble...Right here in River City...that stands for
pool," etc.) A stage performer who also has credits in movies and TV (he
won an emmy for Chicago Hope) Patinkin presented a show last night that had
everything--heart, humor, honestly and alot of panache. Wearing
practically the same outfit as his piano accompanist, Paul Ford--black,
short-sleeved shirt, cotten pants, tennis shoes--Patinkin pulled such songs
from his repertoire as Doodle Doo Doo and Ten Kopecs...a guy wants ten
pennies to romance his girl/Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. His
voice--ranging from lilting near-falsettos to gravelly deep tones when
doing characterizations--was in tip top shape, as was his charisma and
charm. And that only grew stronger as the clock ticked away. Two hours
and 15 min. into the intermissionless show, Patinkin announced, "I'll stay
if you will." The fans, old and new, were in for the long haul. Maybe
Patinkin got out of there sometime this morning.

Well, sure, but a whole *practice* dedicated solely to earlobes? Man, that's
one strange practice. I'd put those doctors in the same category as

Perhaps it's because the role is the most recent, but I kept watching him on

Justice Clarence Thomas (as in the movie, Strange Justice MP did for
Showtime) and as in the man whose alleged behavior was the subject of
hearings to decide whether he would be cleared to become a Supreme Court
Justice or not (he was nominated by Bush when he was President). Big mess
ensued with lots of taking sides of allegations by Anita Hill that he had
said and done things that would be considered sexual harrassment. He was
cleared, but many people think he was guilty as charged and should not have
been seated on the Supreme Court.

<< Hello, *please* can anyone explain just who Clarence Thomas is?? >>

Thomas is an Associate Supreme Court Justice (for those of you not in the
U.S., the Supreme Court is the highest court in the land and is comprised of
nine sitting justices, one of whom is referred to as the "Chief Justice" --
the others are referred to as "Associate Justices"). He was appointed to the
bench by former President George Herbert Walker Bush (father of George *W*
Bush, also known as "Shrub," current Governor of the great but way too big
State of Texas and current frontrunner for the Republican presidential
nomination) amid a flurry of Senate hearings and accusations of sexual
harassment, primarily made by Professor Anita Hill, one of his former
employees at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

There's an interesting outline of the situation at this website:
http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/122/hill/hillframe.htm

It's relevant to the Mandy Patinkin list because Mandy starred in a fairly
recent Showtime production that dealt with some of the behind-the-scenes
action (much of which was probably fictional, but a large part of which was
undoubtedly true).

HTH.

Kevin Spacey was terrific on Wiseguy! Good memory.

The FW/Galveston concert roundup Linda gave was great and thorough....but
here are my 2 cents anyway:

Ended up taking my 10 year old daughter Hannah since neither Taylor nor
Belinda could come with me. Nanny is my "song bird" who knows every word of
triplets and coffee with voices so of my four she was the natural choice :)

I loved hearing "his side" of the first date with Kathryn story en route to
singing the ten kopecs number. Remember KG's column about "Rachel's
Wedding"? She mentions that date, and the flowers.

Hannah wanted to know if those were names of real Russian composers and
later commented that singing in Russian sounded like you're playing his
voice backwards! Interesting observation.

Nanny says her "very" favorite was the Soliloquy from Carousel, "especially
the line 'what if Bill's a girl?'" And she fell asleep in How are things
in Glocca Morra? Her eyes got really big when he delivered the Inigo
Montoya line at the very, very end..."He's HIM, Mommy??!?" Somehow that is
more impressive to her than Dr. Geiger.

Something has been lacking in my daughter's upbringing that she didn't
recognize the Inchworm song or Bein' Green!! Sesame Street was a long time
ago...

We were both in hysterics with "April in Fairbanks"

She told her Dad about audience member "Joe" making a joke that rendered
Mandy nearly speechless when he was supposed to be leading the audience
participation in the Music Man number. We were all supposed to be chanting
"trouble"...in yiddish! Oy! "Joe" was pretty miserable at the pronunciation
and Mandy teased him about being a WASP...Mandy needled him about wanting a
big response out of us when we were to yell "P" for pool. MP: "What are you
gonna say to them to get them to respond?" Joe:"I'll just tell them
there's no intermission and now's your big chance!" Hannah on the phone
tonight: "He meant TO PEE, DADDY! *hysterical fourth grader laughter*"

I'd never heard the story about getting in trouble for singing Mammy. I
relate to his explanation of how he interprets/feels the song. He sings it
from his own life and loves and relationships, not intending any racist
reference to the old south.

Which led to the Miles Davis quote about the silences between the notes
being where genius resides was magnificent! If only my voice students could
hear that, could "get" that when they perform. It just perfectly
encapsulates why I love Mandy Patinkin...its not the voice alone, or the
repertoire...it is the synergy that happens when performer and voice and
music combine in an energy that lifts the music off the page and brings it
to life. That is what makes it Music!

There is nothing to compare with Mandy live. You can't capture the whole
thing and put it on a CD...I am a staunch advocate of live performance, not
even pre-recorded back up gives the same energy.

The way this man can wring meaning out of a word or phrase, paint a scene,
evoke a memory or emotion (Cats in the Cradle, Oh my...how many busy
working moms and dads can hear his rendition of that song without wrenching
pangs of guilt?) The Listener is not passive in his performance, even
without the audience participation numbers ;) He reaches out through the
music and you are changed. But I digress.....(As did the magnificent MP
many a time last night!)

Afterward I was exhausted but could not ignore those shining brown now very
much awake eyes that implored "I know its a school night but Mommy you
PROMISED I could meet him!"...so around to the stage door we traipsed,
discovering that although I'd put a new battery in my friend's camera I
neglected to load the thing with FILM...but a nice lady in a red blazer who
had been one of the groupies to storm the stage and get a hug during
"coffee" took my address and promised to get a pic of my daughter with the
Great One. The line moved fast; He was tired. The ladies behind me were
nearly apoplectic at the mere sight of him (And they had already met Elvis
Costello and Kevin Spacey earlier in the day!) Nanny was excited but true
to her introverted nature clammed up when brought face to face with Mandy.
We both got hugs (Actually I got two!) and he made sure to spell her name
correctly on her picture, as always the gracious generous performer.

Hughes. When I was 2.....Carol

Thanks to Linda and Jennifer for the reviews and for the posts of the
newspaper articles.

>From one critic " It would have been nice, too, if the singer had told us
who wrote some of the more obscure vocal material."

Should've asked one of Mandy's fans.

And, as if getting a bill isn't bad enough, AT&T had to let me know Antonio
Banderas will play the lead in a movie version of "The Phantom of the
Opera"....doing his own singing and dancing. And he was so good in
"Philadelphia." Should've stopped there.......Carol

unsub patinkin
I thought when I joined this email list that I could
correspond with other Mandy fans to discuss his films
and music. I didn't realize I was walking in on a
shooting gallery full of morons. Get a life, people -
your whining and bitching really sucks!
