I wonder what could possibly have spurred me to go there? I had a glorious weekend even before last night's concert--which was quite a weekend capper. The concert was terrific, as usual, with many of the songs mentioned previously. Mandy said he hadn't performed "Ugly Duckling" in a while and threw that one in. Also performed "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?". Lots of stuff from Kidults and other songs I hadn't heard in a while. The show started 20 minutes late because there was some problem with the lights, but Mandy seemed in fine form. He indicated that this was his last concert for a few weeks because he was catching an early flight to LA to shoot Chicago Hope again. He didn't seem tired and his voice was in pretty darn good shape. While waiting for Paul to find the sheet music to brother can you spare a dime, Mandy told a joke. I'm not sure if he has told this joke elsewhere or not. He at first said he heard it from Adam Arkin, then corrected that and said it was told to him by one of the CH writers. Something about an African American, a Jew and a WASP walking down a street in the U.S. while kicking a bottle. Then out comes a genie to grant each of them a wish. The African American wishes that all African Americans go back to Africa. The Jew wishes that all Jews in America go to Israel. The WASP says "All the African Americans are going to Africa? All the Jews are going to Israel? Then I'll have diet coke." Well, it was kind of funny when he told it.... Mandy opened with "Ten Kopeks" and told the Kathryn/date story. He saw me in the front row and reached down and gave me the napkin after "Mazel Tov." Mandy mentioned that the event was sponsored by the Jewish Community Center partly and then said he'd do something he hadn't done since he was 13. He told the story about how he got involved in the JCC and rebelled against his parents when they told him they'd pull him out of plays if his grades didn't improve. (Mandy played hookie from school when he was pulled out of the plays. His parents surrendered and put him back in the plays.) Then he did the tap dancing from the show that he did at 13. It's not true that Mandy hadn't done this since he was 13 since I saw him do a little bit of this in Marin County a couple of years back. But he certainly did more of it in San Antonio. Quite hilarious to see him tap in New Balance shoes. Is he doing this anywhere else? The audience participation song went fine. Lots of people went up onstage surrounding him on all sides. I didn't go up, but did toss up some "Lone Star flag" boxers that were quite loud when he mentioned throwing gifts at his feet while giving directions. He promptly reached down and threw them back out in my direction (the lady next to me had moved forward and caught them but gave them back) saying that I had to wait for the cue. When the song ended Mandy asked for his glasses, told the crowd they could touch Paul too, and read some note on a package someone gave him. In the package was a camera (is that person on this list?) and a lady asked to have a picture taken with Mandy. Or maybe it was to take a picture with the little girl who was onstage. I think I digress and that was later.... Someone else left her earring for Mandy. At some point Mandy ripped some guy's business card up. Then he put on the shorts that I had thrown back on the stage (over his pants). He made jokes about wearing them on Chicago Hope, Then Mandy asked a little girl what she got him. She said "A kiss." Very cute. Mandy got down on his knee and she kissed him on the lips. Mandy wore the shorts for a while then asked if he looked silly in them. The crowd yelled "No" but he eventually tooke them off. He said he'd wear them on the plane the next morning so someone would notice and talk to him. Someone had left lipstick as a gift. Mandy started telling a story later about how on Chicago Hope he is not as bald because they didn't want the lights reflecting on his bald head. He said they paint a bit of it in. He joked, "It was either that or hair plugs." Then he joked about network executives and producers handing down orders from on high about covering bald spots. Later on, I don't even remember the context at the moment, some guy yelled out something about "Your bald spot is reflecting!" I think Mandy asked if he was lit enough when he sat on the side of the stage. After this was yelled out, Mandy went and got the lipstick and colored in his baldspot. Later he was smoothing his hair and got it all over his hands. The lipstick was smooshed all over and was quite visible when he sat on the edge.) MP got his usual several standing ovations, including after Buddy Blues (I LOVE IT when he does that routine). "Oh What a Circus" he performed brilliantly as well. Earlier in the show messed up the Minute Waltz and started over. He thought he messed up Ugly Duckling, but Paul assured him he had not. After the concert there were just a few people from the JCC who saw him first, then about 20 others waiting. Smallest crowd I've seen in a while after a concert, actually. I talked to MP a bit about Wild Party. He said Vanessa Williams isn't doing it because she's pregnant. He asked if I knew anything about Toni Collette and I said only that she's Australian. He asked me if I'd seen Sixth Sense and pointed out that she was the mother and mentioned specifically the scene with the boy in the car. He seems excited to be working with her. I asked Mandy about the Japanese film he purportedly had done the voiceover for. He asked me how I knew about that and I mentioned there is information on the web about it. He seemed surprised at what kind of information you can find on the web and asked how I found it. I said by doing a search on his name. He laughed when I said 'You'd be surprised what you can find. On the web you can even find what boards you serve on." He then said a bit about the voiceover job--naming a friend who had got him involved. He said he thought it was supposed to be released in theaters, but didn't have a clue about when. I told Mandy that he wasn't the only one flying back to LA in the morning. He asked what time I was flying. I said 6:45am and he said "We're on the same plane!" He seemed to think I live in San Fran (probably because of the multitude of concerts I've seen there.) and asked if I was then flying to San Francisco. After we conversed a bit more, we said goodbye. He said "Get some sleep! I'll see you in the morning!" Off he went to the rental Ford Explorer with Staci and Paul. Sure enough as I approached my gate in the morning, there was Mandy just boarding with first class (they boarded very early.) As I boarded, he saw me, smiled and said "hello." We talked very briefly while I waited in the aisle and then I sat in "steerage" a mere three seats behind him. The curtains between sections were not closed for long, so I saw his lovely bald head and New Balance shoes for much of the flight. If you are curious about what Mandy did on the flight.... he drank orange juice, read the New York Times (even during takeoff--when he had to be asked to straighten his seat ;) ) and later read his CH script. (Presumably running his lines for the day.) When we got to LA, we both were in the baggage area. I left him alone because he was clearly talking on the phone. (Actually, he looked like he was talking to himself, but it's because he has a phone with an ear piece or something other.) I think he was asking the CH production office if they had sent a car for him. He mentioned he had another car at the airport if they didn't. A bit later I saw a driver with him claiming his bags off the carousel. Then I heard him say my name and saw him walking toward me. We shook hands, he said something to me which I can't quite remember. Something along the lines of "Good seeing you... blah blah blah... until next time." I said something like "Go give 'em hell as Geiger." Then I asked what episode he was working on. He said #8. That was about it.... He was driven off in a town car on his way to the Fox lot. (After he left, I realized he called me by my real name. I didn't know he knew it as he always calls me "phantm" or "Phantom Pants.") Kind of an interesting evening and morning for me... phantm<--sorry for the rambling post (and I'mprobably forgetting lots of things as I think I got about an hour of sleep) ############################################################ The Peter MacNicol Page Mandy Patinkin Showcase http://www.petermacnicol.net http://www.mandypatinkin.net ############################################################ ----------------Message-boundary From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: San Antonio Spur Date: Mon, 18 Oct 1999 13:16:08 EDT great story TT..I thought about you being there all weekend..glad it went well!!!!!
