That's what I would have thought, too. I do watch the show but either I
didn't notice the t-shirt or those episodes haven't been shown here yet.

Will someone please answer that burning question that's already been asked

The Mpls. Star Tribune newspaper has a very complimentary blurb about Mandy
under CRITIC'S CHOICE in their TV section:

"Back in his role as Dr. Jeffery Geiger in CBS' "Chicago Hope," Mandy
Patinkin is like a human cardio-shock paddle. His intensity could jump start
almost anything back to life--even a TV series with fading vital signs.
NBC's "ER," which inaugurated a more frantic pace and yellow surgical scrubs
in last week's sixth-season debut, would have been wiser to recruit him."

Rock a bye your baby with a Dixie melody;
When yoou croon, croon a tune,
from the heart of Dixie
just hang my cradle, Mammy mine,
right on that Mason Dixon line;
and swing in from Virginia,
to Tennesse with all the love that's in yer.
Weep no more my lady,
sing that song again for me;
and Old Black Joe, jast as though
you had me on your knee;
A million baby kisses I'll deliver,
the minute that you sing the Swannee River;
Rock a bye your rockabye baby

Once again, Krispy Kreme t-shirts can be purchased from their website.
And they're extremely popular, even in places that don't have KK stores. So
it doesn't seem odd to me that someone who lived in Cleveland would have a KK
t-shirt, just like it doesn't seem odd to me that someone who lived in -- say
-- Minneapolis would have a t-shirt from Starbucks or Disneyland.

I never saw the first query, but Krispy Kremes are simply the finest

Subject: Tonight's Hope: A Bit Off
Date: Thu, 7 Oct 1999 17:31:51 EDT

Today's LA Times (Thurs) has a long article entitled "Hope Inspired by
Surgeon with Tourette's". It tells of a surgeon, Dr. Morton Dornan, in
northwest Canada who discovered he had Tourette's syndrome when he was 37.
He's now 59 and still practicing in British Columbia. "He displayed symptoms
including tics, obsessive-compulsive rituals and uncontrolled,
expletive-laden outbursts. But in the operating room, hovering over a
patient, a different person emerged, one with focused gaze and steady hands".

His case was brought to Hope's attention because he was written about in a
1995 book. He says when he's operating he's rock steady and if he gets a
tic, he just steps back for a second.

The neurological disorder is "caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain".

Dr. Dornan said that the episode of Hope (must have been given a
prescreening) was "well done...It was a little strong, but I guess that's
Hollywood. There was nothing that was unrealistic or phony."

Former C.H. producer Jeffrey Kramer also has Tourettes. He says his motor
and verbal tics are nowhere near as pronounced as Auberjonois' character,
however.

:->  Wendy
P.S. No, no Mandy mention in the article. Mentioned DEK.
P.P.S. While I'm here - for any L.A. area people, Channel 9 is showing
Ragtime Sunday at 3 p.m.

just saw tonight's episode. Mandy is no listed as a special guest star--but
still billed fourth. Odd---but it looks like some one else had a problem with
his billing.

Interesting episode but those people on CH have got to stop being so mean to
Geiger. Not everything he says is insane---he did have a point tonight. It
really is too bad that DEK isnt writing this show--it would be so much better.

I really liked tonight's show, though I imagine I would have liked it even
better had DEK written it. But I was glad to see some of the old
Geiger-Shutt relationship back. Aaron can "get to" Jeffrey better than
anyone else can. Most of my favorite scenes from the early shows were the
two of them together.

And who can gripe about the pantless Geiger?

He even looks mean when he says his lines -- something that didn't happen

softened the words he was saying. Maybe it IS because DEK isn't writing the

I finally got to watch all of Hope...

(My excuse? I have four kids ...*grin*...)

Tonight's episode seemed heavy handed to me. No subtlety. The parallels
between Geiger and Kerry too obvious and viewers could see the reminder of
Shutt's comments in the courtroom coming from miles away.

Something does seem to be missing from the way Geiger is being written. I
used to like him, the not-quite-sane, arrogant, genius. He had an
endearing, and vulnerable side...
Now I'm not so sure.

Liked Auberjonois...
Loved seeing MP as always...

Just a thought. I'm by no means an authority on this, just a casual viewer!

Subject: The New and Improved (?) Jeffrey Geiger
Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1999 01:23:41 EDT

I've been watching my season one tapes a lot lately, and I really feel that
the season six Geiger isn't being written right.

In season one, when there were medical issues, even if I didn't agree with
his point of view, he had a valid, reasoned point. Now they give him
questionable motives and viewpoints that have me going, "huh?"

As far as his personality goes, he's off there too. The old Jeffrey wasn't
constantly going into histrionics. He had more of a range. The new Geiger
is manic all the time, always mean, always revved up about something.

And while I can never complain about seeing him pantless :), it seemed not to
fit tonight. Usually he only does that when he's really upset about
something personal (Laurie or Geri). I just didn't see it tonight.

Must say though...glad to have him back (any Geiger is good Geiger).

I wonder if the writers write him this way because they think Geiger was a
character people loved to hate. (Personally, I loved to love him...)

Just some thoughts. Laura

It's great to see Geiger back ...with his trains, without pants....pants
with a small p :>

I thought Rene Auberjonois was excellent. There was a brief period during
the argument with Geiger in which Geiger was overshadowed or at least had
met his match. Or maybe Mandy had met his match acting-wise.

Barbara Hershey looks like she has a slight paralysis of the left side of
her face. Most of her shots are from the right. In the beginning scenes
when she's talking and when she smiles with her mouth open, it was most
noticeable. Was she like that before? I wonder if she had a silicone
implant in her upper lip and had some nerve paralysis.

I loved the show!.....Carol

Subject: Chicago Hope cheers and jeers
Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1999 00:07:08 -0700

My Cheers and Jeers for tonight's episode:

First the Cheers (and there are mighty few):

1. Phantom pants. TT, you got your wish! Unfortunately, the shortness
of the scene seemed to take the pantlessness out of context unless you are a
longtime viewer (which of course we all are)

2. The treadmill scene. With the teeshirt that you could see through and
the jogging shorts. Is that sort of how he looked in the York elevator,
ladies?

Jeer within a Cheer: Why did he need to wear the teeshirt at all?

3. The Jeffrey / Aaron scene. While not at the closeness level of season
one, at least they have FINALLY spoken privately this season. And Aaron
seemed to care enough to come and discuss the situation with Jeffrey (and as
already stated, Aaron knows Jeffrey better than Jeffrey does himself). And
he asked about Jeffrey in the operating room. This is good; Jeffrey needs
Aaron.

Jeers:

1. Spaghetti Head. What is her problem with Geiger? She just always
expects the worst from him and so she gets it. And those looks she gives
him! What did he ever do to her? He's certainly been nicer to her than he
ever was to Austin. At least Austin had a reason to dislike him. In
addition, the visiting doctor (Kerry?) started out expecting trouble from
Geiger. How fair is that?

2. Everybody else ASSUMING Geiger always acts like a jerk. Everyone
accused him of provoking Dr Kerry. I'm sorry, maybe I'm missing something,
but I've watched the scene in his office several times now and Dr Kerry came
charging in yelling, Geiger tried to calm him down, Kerry started wrecking
the place, and finally Geiger had to restrain him. I've gotta say I don't
really blame Geiger for not wanting him to do the surgery at that point.
Then Spaghetti Head and Aaron both accused him of provoking Dr Kerry without
ever letting him say what really happened.

3. Geiger's weekly eruptions are beginning to be as predictable as Kate
Austin's crying jags. And everyone else is just as calm and sweet as can be
which just makes Geiger look even more temperamental. Why can't the writers
just give him a calm episode where he can be brilliant and save several
lives and impress the heck out of everyone around him? Why is it that every
week he has to take a harsh and unpopular stand and then change his mind and
meekly come around to doing what everyone else wants him to do in the end?

And I didn't really appreciate Phillip's comment that he should never come
out of the operating room.

4. "Special guest star Mandy Patinkin" in the credits. What's up with
that? Why did they add the guest star part? How is he supposed to win a
best acting Emmy if he's labeled a guest star? He won't win a guest Emmy
for CH -- they give those to people who come on for one or two episodes,
like the guy did tonight (Rene Au------ something something, I'm sorry Star
Trekkers, I don't know how to spell his last name and it's not listed in TV
Guide, I really did look, I'm sorry).

5. Finally, and being very picky now, the clothes Gina Simon wears. The
men all wear ties, Spaghetti Head dresses nicely, and Gina wears a tiny
little blouse and tight pants that look like she's going out on a date,
rather than dressed for work. She may be in the heighth of fashion but I
don't think she comes across as a serious doctor. I won't comment on Lauren
Holly's appearance because I think she's supposed to be some "granola chick"
as a friend of mine would put it, which would explain the leather/beaded
chokers and wrist bands she wears.

Okay, I feel much better now for having said all that. I'm going back to
watch the treadmill scene again. Next?

:-) Joanne
