Subject: Tonight!
Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 09:11:17 -0400 (EDT)
The premiere is tonight!! And here's a review from today's Washington POST:
Stash those defibrilator paddles, shut off the heart-lung machine and 86 the
oxygen tank. 'Chicago Hope' is not worth keeping alive. This horrible,
cynical CBS medical show should have been allowed to expire last spring, but
instead, series creator David E. Kelley came back to try very artificial
respiration.
Many of the old cast members are gone but the setting remains the same, a
Chicago hospital where the doctors are cranks, jerks or prma donnas. CH is
just the show for people who feel insufficiently terrified at the prospect
of ever having to be admitted to a hospital

The definitively insufferable Mandy Patinkin returns for a guest shot as Dr.
Jeffrey Geiger, who at first refuses to perform a life-saving operation on a
7-year old boy because he wants to sit in his office and play with electric
trains.
Now did somebody get up on the wrong side of bed or what? The full review is
up at www.washingtonpost.com, on their Style page.
Regards,
Brenda

this from an ATlanta paper:
A shot in the arm for season starter 'Chicago Hope'
"Another pizza-sucking peasant, just what this hospital needs," is how
newly arrived Dr. Alberghetti is intorduced tonight by J.G. the most
irresistibly hated character on TV, back with a vengeance.
Geiger always centered this show, and when he left during the second
season, it started to wander off into one tedious wilderness.
And it is still unclear how frequent Patinkin's role will be this season.
What is clear is that he should appear in as many scenes as possible; he's
what distinguishes "CH" from everything else on TV."

Since this WAS from an Atlanta paper, I figure the following comment is in
order:
"You ain't just whistlin' Dixie!" (Honestly, I don't know the origin of the
phrase, but a modern translation would be "Damn straight!" )

On Thursday, when talking about Sean McDermott, I wrote:

Well, yestereday I paid for the CD and the first thing I did was look
through the booklet. There are a few pages of photos of Sean in various
productions - including a 'posed-for' photo from Falsettos. ---- Mandy WAS
still in it when Sean took over from Stephen Bogardus!!!! :) There was a
picture of Mandy and Sean 'playing' squash. MP wearing his New Balance
runners (and with his sport socks pulled up over the ends of his [light
blue] track pant legs).
Having got over the shock of suddenly seeing Mandy in that shot I looked at
the smaller photos of Sean, with various people, just inside the back of
the booklet .... and there HE was again! Looking completely gorgeous! (I'm
going to have to get that small (1.125"x1.5") pic enlarged).
I'm kinda glad I bought the CD! :)

Hi, my 2 cents on the show: Geiger is great - the rest of the show was OK.
Barbara Hershey didn't even register, but I liked Lauren Holly. This was
Adam Arkin's best show in years - I love the little tension scene between
Shutt and Geiger. Methinks a showdown is brewing for them. I also liked
the little girl playing Alicia. As for MP's billing, I'd guess he was
willing to accept 4th billing in exchange for a ton of money and a flex
schedule! Mary p.s. I loved the first scene with Geiger giving the tour to
the Asian men. LOL!

Interesting that he said 7 years ago, as that episode aired in "our time" 5
years ago (the fall of 1994). I'm not sure if they've fast forwarded a
couple of years to explain the size of Alicia or what. It seems that CH
is operating on a different timeline than the viewers.

This one had me counting on my fingers as well. Actually, as shocking as it
seems for her to be so big, Alicia's age is about right - she was almost two
when Jeffrey left. But if season one took place roughly in "our" time, which
it gave every appearance of having done, the other Marfan surgery was 5
years ago.
Poor Geiger seems to have a number problem -- first the number of bullets in
Alan Birch's body, and now this.

I, for one, felt better as soon as he said that. Because my first reaction
upon seeing Alicia was oops, she's way too old. But saying it had been 7
years fixed that.
KJ wrote:

Thank you KJ! I was trying to figure out what kind of plastic surgery she
must have had. Not that she looked bad. Just like she had to wear a lot of
makeup or something to look as good as she did. I really hope she doesn't
have some romantic fling with Geiger -- she's too old for him.
And as for Alicia: MY favorite scene was at the end when she climbed up and
cuddled with him -- LUCKY little girl!!!

I'm transplanting my comments from the ch newsgroup, so pardon any
redundancies:
Not on par with episodes like Quarantine and Love and Hope from season one, but
a good start nonetheless towards reviving this ailing show, IMO. It was
damn good to see Geiger roaming the hospital again and playing with trains.
I thought
Lauren Holly and Mandy Patinkin were the standouts as far as acting, along with
Bruce Davison in an excellent guest turn. (I kind of wish Bruce Davison would
stick around the show a while, despite the fact that he plays a doctor who is
clearly careless.) I am not sure what to think of Dr. "Spa"ghetti yet. (But
is it even possible for her to be as annoying as Kate Austin? I think not.)
I liked the scenes with Geiger and his(/Birch's) daughter Alicia. Seems to be
good chemistry there. Although the actress portraying Alicia appears to be a
tad old for the role. Alicia was born in early 1995 as I recall (January 1995
is when the birth episode aired, I believe). If CH is in real time with the
audience, then she would be just shy of 5. On the other hand, perhaps she is
seven now in CH time. (Geiger stated that he lost a patient seven years prior
under similar circumstances. That show aired five years ago in the fall of
1994, so I guess CH is not keeping the same time frame as the audience.)
Aaron was more interesting with Geiger around. (Or was it just David Kelley's
writing? Probably both.) I look forward to more interesting scenes with
Shutt and Geiger in the future. Even the usually boring Jack McNeil I found
much improved tonight-especially when he "took charge" when the Carla Gugino
character awkwardly broke the news to the wife of the liposuction patient.
The priest storyline seemed the least riveting, despite the tabloidesque ring
to it. (DEK does love stories about severed body parts, doesn't he?)
I'm not sure how much I like the new theme and opening titles yet, but they
beat the second ER-esque theme and titles on my scorecard. And I was happy to
hear the original theme for Chicago Hope incorporated into this new one. CH
should have never dropped the original theme at all (a jeer to Les Moonves).

But she wasn't. In the second episode of the second season, Alan says she's
eleven months old. Alan died in the eighth episode--before Christmas that
year. She was about 14 months old when Alan died. Listen to how they refer
to happenings from previous shows within the show. It's always, "last week,
you called me an ass", for example. I think this time warp was created
because DEK wanted an older Alicia who could talk intelligently. I don't
think he really counts on we the die-hard, detail-obsessed fans who
meticulously track these things. :)

Did everyone catch the two pairs of glasses Geiger whipped off at the
beginning of the M&M conference in tonight's episode?
I wish someone would tell Mandy that nobody does that but him! It was cute
(but kinda weird) in his concerts, it looked ridiculous and unexplainable in
Strange Justice, and now he's doing it in Chicago Hope! Can't the man find
an eye doctor who can prescribe him one pair of glasses that works for him?
And even if he really does need to wear two pairs at once, why do it in a
scene where he's playing a character and only pretending to read?
AND he's wearing his wedding ring again. (Looks like he took it off for
Elmo's movie, but not for CH). It would be fine if he were supposed to be
married but it doesn't look like he is. So what's his deal?
Wait, what am I thinking? This is Mandy, who likes to interject all kinds
of personal attributes into his characters. (I'm beginning to think he
never leaves home any more without his train set!)
Forget I said anything -- it was a lovely show! :-)

They are a bit fuzzy, but there are now screen caps from this episode at
the Mandy Patinkin Showcase.

Is anyone able to record the new theme as a .wav file and send it to me as
an attachment, please? You've got me intrigued and I don't particularly
want to wait until February sometime before I can hear it for myself!
Please let me know!
Talking of that sort of thing - has everyone (who can) downloaded the
little video clip of MP & KG from Men With Guns (from the official site)?
It's quite good! :)

I didn't think they were fuzzy at all! Thanks for those - they'll help tide
me over for the next 4-5 months. So many lovely close-ups, too! :)
That's another 20 pics (plus the "biscard" 'divider') for my CH slide show
screensaver! (Which now totals 234).

The actor's name is Alan Rosenberg. He played Cybill's ex-husband, Ira on "Cybill"
and also played Eli on both "Civil Wars" and "L.A. Law"
