LOL!! Just know that if you faint at Mandy's feet, you won't be the first!!
No, not me.......but some of us were witness last summer to some poor woman
dropping right to the floor while talking to him. He didn't catch her - no
time really, but he did kneel right down and try to help. He even fixed her
skirt as he knelt, since it flipped up a bit when she fell. Such a
gentleman!!! But can you imagine coming around to find Dr. Geiger hovering
over you??!! ;)

This Proctor and Gamble Satanist stuff has been around forever, and throughly
denied. Apparently the rumor was lent credence by the symbol of the moon and
stars that used to (perhaps still does?) adorn the P&G packaging. In reality
the moon and stars was simply a doodle some longshoreman sketched on one of
their crates decades ago, and somebody saw it and liked it and adopted it as
the company's trademark. No Satanism involved. No boycott needed.

I watch it all the time...it has a certain appeal and is better than it was
the 1st season ( I have seen reruns) ANdrew used to be the Angell of Death
exclusively; now he does both death and helper angel.

I asked my brother to translate an article from German for me. The full
article is on my site, but a couple of excerpts are below. The first I
found amusing (methinks Gideon may not have a clue what Dad's fee for
singing is), the second I don't remember reading in other press about
Mamaloshen. (And seem to be very strong words from MP, if the translation
is accurate.)

<<"Oyfn Pripetshik", the last song describes how a Rabbi teaches the Jewish
alphabet to small children. The last child's voice in the choir belongs to
Patinkin's son Gideon who was eleven at the time. "I absolutely want to
pass this legacy on to him. Someday he will hopefully understand that."
Before the undertaking, Gideon was not too inspired about it. His mood
decidedly improved with the prospect of $20 extra pocket money. "We could
have encouraged him also with some duct tape, but that would have been too
simple and much too obvious.">>

Thanks for the article, phantm...it was intersting. Mandy seemed to feel so
passionately about that album. It's beautiful, both the music and the

anti-Semiticism was an issue in his not being able to perform it many

Today on CNN's "Showbiz Today" they were talking about the new TV
season. Suddenly, there he was. All of the clips were from old shows.
However, they did have one (very short) shot of Mandy talking about the
"new" show and the changes and firings. He said, "It was difficult.
Arbitrary I'm sure, in many cases, that certain people had to go. It's
always difficult. You wish everybody could stay." That was it. He was
wearing a white T-shirt and off white coat. I tried taking a picture of
it from the VCR - didn't turn out too well.......sorry. See picture
below (I hope - depends on if this works with your system.)

Not sure - perhaps this show repeats later?

The article was really interesting, but I don't agree that
anti-Semitism has anything to do with theaters not wanting a Mamoloshen
concert, (considering his fees). Most have to sell the place out to
make money and a lot of people wouldn't go hear a foreign language
concert even if it was from their heritage. My neighbor is Jewish and I
asked if she wanted to hear it and she looked at me like I was from
Mars. Along with the *I don't understand a word* to the *why in the
world are you listening to it?* and the look that was pretty clear that
I had no business listening to it because I WASN'T Jewish. Talk about a
weird feeling...I mean ask yourselves, (those who aren't Jewish) when
was the last time you went to a concert in the language you ancestors
came with.
Renee- hates to see him feel bad but I remember seeing him on Regis and
KathiLee and on Rosie singing Mamoloshen songs

Subject: Re: Excerpts from a German Article about Mamaloshen

Thanks for the article, phantm! It's always interesting to read something
translated from another language into English, as English is such a
complicated language with so many exceptions to its own rules.

Got a kick out of the following translations:

"... and as the whimsical Dr. Geiger ..."

Whimsical? I thought, as I rushed to my dictionary, which gave me the
following:

"whim si cal (hwim zi k l, wim -) adj. 1 full of or characterized by
whims or whimsy 2 oddly out of the ordinary; fanciful; freakish 3
subject to sudden change; unpredictable whim si cal ly adv."

Hmm, okay, I guess that fits. But never in my most creative moments would I
have come up with "whimsical" as an adjective for Jeffrey Geiger! My
horizons have been expanded -- LOL!

Another excerpt:
"Patinkin, whose life as a star has taken its usual run, is married and in
between has had two sons."

In between? In between what? In between the sheets? Don't get me started,
I'm still laughing.

"...Patinkin with a sumptuous Rabbi beard that he had grown himself..."

Again to the dictionary:

"sump tu ous (sump s) adj. [[ME < OFr sumptueux < L sumptuosus <
sumptus: see prec.]] 1 involving great expense; costly; lavish 2
magnificent or splendid, as in furnishings, etc. sump tu ous ly adv. sump
tu ous ness n."

Well, I don't think it was expensive for him to grow and while it is big, I
personally never thought it was magnificent or splendid. But, I guess it's
a matter of taste. (I did, however, think his beard in Yentl was splendid -
lol!) It is nice to know he grew it himself -- ha ha.

As to his comments about no reaction at home and no talk shows, etc., I seem
to recall him appearing on Rosie O'Donnell (is there a hotter talk show
right now?) and Regis and Kathie Lee to promote the album. And I thought
there was quite a bit of press about the album and for once, it was all
positive. And from the Jewish community: how about the cover story of
Hadassah? Although I just noticed it was dated January 1999 which was after
the date of this article so maybe some of the attention came afterwards.

I know the reactions to the CD and the concerts have been mixed and I feel
badly that he's been hurt by it. But I thought his purpose in making the
album was to fulfill his own need for "connection and identity" and to pass
on the old language to a new generation. It clearly has limited appeal as
not everyone has Yiddish in their ancestry. I have thought that it's gotten
a pretty big reaction, given its narrow focus. I think he ought to be
pleased and very proud of what he's done. My only surprise was that it got
no Grammy nomination, but who knows how that all works?

As far as anti-Semitic reactions, I can't comment because I truly don't
understand anti-Semitism. What is there to be against?

/ Joanne --> clearly with too much time on her hands on this holiday

I should have poor Oly Svendsen call him up. That poor guy hasn't
gotten any press about his accordian concerts since 1933, but he isn't
attributing it to anti-scandinavitism. :o)

Subject: MP - Better pic

I feel better now - after sending that terrible shot from CNN which I
took from my VCR tape - I found the picture posted on one of CNN's pages
:

http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/TV/9909/03/tv.thursday.lineup/index.html

The picture is at:

http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/TV/9909/03/tv.thursday.lineup/mandy.patankin.jpg

Hope that's better!!

Kathy
